Customer Spotlight: Calvert Home Mortgage Investment Corporation

Calvert Home Mortgage Investment Corporation (CHMIC) has been helping Canadians access flexible mortgage financing for more than 50 years. Lending across Alberta and Ontario, they provide short-term, equity-based financing for homeowners, real estate investors and borrowers who fall outside traditional lending guidelines.

Lending with Purpose

At the heart of Calvert’s business is a simple belief: everyone deserves a place to call home. Since 1975, Calvert Home Mortgage has helped borrowers and mortgage brokers navigate transitional financial situations by serving niche groups like real estate investors that flip and sell properties or situations where quick bridge financing would save the day on a quick close. In doing so, the company helps supports revitalized communities and the pathway to homeownership.

That purpose is reflected in Calvert’s mission: to be Canada’s most trusted mortgage lender so that its customers, investors and partners succeed and grow in thriving communities.

Today, Calvert’s approximately 68 employees work alongside more than 3,000 mortgage brokers and serve 500+ investors/shareholders. Despite its growth, relationships and trust remain central to how the company does business. Calvert Home Mortgage takes the time to understand each deal, works closely with its broker partners and homeowners with the long-term interests and success of borrowers in mind.

Milestones Worth Celebrating

Over more than five decades, Calvert has reached several significant milestones:

  • 2026 marked 50 years in business.
  • $2.9 billion in residential mortgages across 12,000+ mortgage transactions.
  • Funding more than $1 billion in the past three years alone.
  • Building relationships with more than 3,000 mortgage brokers across Alberta and Ontario.
  • Expanding its lending solutions across Alberta and Ontario.
  • Being recognized as one of Waterstone Human Capital’s Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures, with certification from 2022 through 2025.

A Partnership Built on Trust

Calvert’s relationship with Treefort began in October 2024, following changes to Financial Service Regulatory Authority (FSRA) requirements that required independent identity verification on client-direct files.

After reviewing available options, Calvert Home Mortgage selected Treefort to support the new requirements while keeping the verification experience straightforward for both clients and its internal team.

Treefort has since become a regular part of Calvert’s client-direct lending process. A centralized and standardized workflow has helped reduce manual follow-up and bring greater consistency to how client identities are verified.

The relationship extends beyond the technology. When questions or verification issues come up, the Calvert Home Mortgage and Treefort teams work together to resolve them. Treefort’s responsiveness helps address issues efficiently and keep mortgage files moving when additional information is required.

For Calvert Home Mortgage, identity verification isn’t simply about meeting a requirement. Mortgage transactions involve people’s homes, money and personal information. Strong verification practices are an important part of protecting clients, broker partners and investors while maintaining trust throughout the lending process.

Looking Ahead

As fraud becomes more sophisticated, Calvert Home Mortgage remains focused on strengthening security without making the mortgage experience unnecessarily complicated for the people it serves.

Technology will continue to play an important role, but for Calvert Home Mortgage, it works best when enhances relationships instead of replaces them. The goal is to use technology to make lending safer while maintaining the personal service that has defined the company for more than 50 years.

Calvert Home Mortgage looks forward to continuing its relationship with Treefort and building on the identity verification processes already in place as technology and fraud prevention practices continue to develop.

“Trust is the foundation of every mortgage transaction. As fraud continues to evolve, it’s important that we continue investing in solutions that protect our borrowers, broker partners and investors while maintaining a smooth client experience. Treefort has become an important part of that commitment by helping strengthen our identity verification process and supporting our ongoing focus on responsible lending and fraud prevention.” – Garrett LaBarre, Underwriter Manager for Calvert Home Mortgage Investment Corporation
